🍂 St. Martin’s Day — A Portuguese Tradition That Warms the Heart
Every year on 11 November, Portugal celebrates St. Martin’s Day, one of its most cherished traditions. It’s a day filled with warmth, friendship, and the comforting aroma of roasted chestnuts and Jeropiga (a sweet fortified wine).
🌤 The Legend of St. Martin
According to legend, on a cold and stormy day, Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier, met a beggar shivering in the rain. Moved by compassion, he cut his cloak in half and shared it with the man. Suddenly, the clouds cleared, and the sun began to shine — a phenomenon that became known as “St. Martin’s Summer.”
Since then, the Portuguese have celebrated this day with a spirit of generosity and gratitude, gathering around bonfires, roasting chestnuts, and toasting with Jeropiga or the season’s new wine.
🍁 A Celebration of Autumn and Togetherness
St. Martin’s Day also marks the arrival of autumn and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. It’s a time to honour nature’s bounty, celebrate community, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food, laughter, and connection.
